This month, the City of Shreveport, LA selected Revere Control Systems to perform their water and wastewater SCADA system Upgrade. There was intense interest in this project because the City of Shreveport is currently under an EPA Consent Decree similar to what Baton Rouge currently is going through which has required the city of Baton Rouge to recently spend approximately $1 Billion dollars for their sewer upgrade program to bring the city back into EPA standards compliance.

The Architectural and Engineers Selection Committee gave the following reasons for selecting Revere for this project. The reasons below are not ranked in any particular order or importance:

Good References from our previous Revere customers

Revere showed the most interest and effort in selecting Certified Fair Share Goal Participation

Good recommendations from Shreveport operators and the City Engineer for our PM’s previous work with the city and his experience with the Citect equipment

Good recommendations to the selection committee from the previous contract holder

Revere will be teaming with the following companies to reach the 35% participation goal for Shreveport’s Fair Share Program: IMS, Communications One, and UtiliWorks.

It is sometimes difficult to explain to customers and prospects how our participation in the Automation Alliance Group (the Alliance), with its associated global reach, benefits them. We recently had a perfect yet simple demonstration.

An OEM client of ours that produces odor control equipment for municipal wastewater applications was bidding on an odor control system project in Romania and they asked us to include a line item for startup on our controls. One of our Alliance partners, Canada-based JNE, has an office near Belgrade, Serbia. JNE’s quote for startup services provided from their local office came to 9,000 EUR which is about $12,000 USD. This price included 2 engineers, 1 translator, and all travel expenses, including airfare. By comparison, for us to send 2 engineers (without a translator) to Belgrade for a startup period would have cost nearly twice that. And because all the Alliance members adhere to the same CSIA best practices, the end-user will receive the same caliber of service.

Being able to offer our OEM clients more economical options helps them win more projects and make more profit due to a smoother startup. Being able to offer the same types of economies to our end-user customers means they get a better price without any loss of quality performance.

Construction of the new $1 billion Port of Miami tunnel has taken a giant leap forward now that “Harriet”, the largest diameter soft ground tunnel boring machine (TBM) in the United States, is digging the first of two tunnels under Biscayne Bay. On Friday, November 4, 2011, following a worldwide tradition, the TBM was christened with her name: Harriet, selected by the Miami-Dade County Girl Scouts for Harriet Tubman, the founder of the Underground Railroad that helped guide dozens of slaves to freedom. Hundreds from various subcontractor and vendor firms were present at this momentous occasion on a gorgeous South Florida day. Just seven days later, at 4:30 a.m. on Friday, November 11, 2011, Harriet’s break-in commenced.

The machine, which will build the tunnel walls as it digs, has also begun assembling the segments forming the lip of the tunnel entrance. “This is an exact business. This is engineering at its finest,” said Chris Hodgkins, the vice-president of Miami Access Tunnel. As of January 16, 2012, the TBM is more than 400 feet into the ground with more than 70 rings installed. Harriet, which is four stories tall and as long as a football field, will continue boring over the next six months before breaking through on Dodge Island. Harriet will then be partly disassembled, turned around and re-assembled before boring out the separate return tunnel to Watson Island.

James Noe, Project Manager for Revere Control Systems, earned this badge for attending the Port of Miami Tunnel Boring Machine Launch Ceremony.

Revere Control Systems designed and built the controls for a conveyor system spanning the eastbound MacArthur Causeway which will remove the paste-like spoils from the tunnel and transport them to a plant on Watson Island where water will be removed. Tons of soil is expected to be excavated for the tunnel. For more information on the tunneling process, visit http://www.portofmiamitunnel.com/system/js/back/ckfinder/userfiles/files/11-04-11-pomt-fact.pdf.

When complete, the tunnel will provide direct access between the Port of Miami and I-395 and I-95. The tunnel is also expected to improve traffic flow in downtown Miami by reducing the number of cargo trucks and cruise related vehicles on congested downtown streets. The tunnel is expected to be open to the public by May of 2014.

The centerpiece of that makeover was a new logo (shown at left). The objective was to achieve something simpler, more contemporary and easier to work with across all usages while maintaining a transitional appearance that built on the logo that had served us for 30 years. We’re very pleased with the result and particularly like the fact that the designers have given us a design that can be used in some different configurations, shown below.

CSIA members must be re-audited every 3 years in order to maintain their certification. This is the third time that we have passed the audit since our original certification in 2002.

The certification program was established by CSIA to help consumers of control system integration services identify those integrators that adhere to the best practices for the industry. The audit, performed by an independent third party, examines 200 criteria that cover all aspects of business operations, from general management and human resources practices to financial management and business development practices.

Our senior managers agree, as do most integrators who have achieved certification, that the process of preparing for the certification audit, and the feedback obtained from the audit, have contributed greatly to improvements in our business through the years.

We encourage all end users and consulting engineers to specify that the selected control system integrator for your projects must be CSIA certified to assure the greatest possible opportunity for a positive experience.
