Dig It! Machine Begins Boring Port of Miami Tunnel

by Susan Gentle

Tunnel Machine launch ceremony

Large crowd on hand for ground breaking and christening of the tunnel boring machine (TBM ,shown in background).

Construction of the new $1 billion Port of Miami tunnel has taken a giant leap forward now that “Harriet”, the largest diameter soft ground tunnel boring machine (TBM) in the United States, is digging the first of two tunnels under Biscayne Bay.  On Friday, November 4, 2011, following a worldwide tradition, the TBM was christened with her name: Harriet, selected by the Miami-Dade County Girl Scouts for Harriet Tubman, the founder of the Underground Railroad that helped guide dozens of slaves to freedom. Hundreds from various subcontractor and vendor firms were present at this momentous occasion on a gorgeous South Florida day. Just seven days later, at 4:30 a.m. on Friday, November 11, 2011, Harriet’s break-in commenced.

The machine, which will build the tunnel walls as it digs, has also begun assembling the segments forming the lip of the tunnel entrance.  “This is an exact business. This is engineering at its finest,” said Chris Hodgkins, the vice-president of Miami Access Tunnel. As of January 16, 2012, the TBM is more than 400 feet into the ground with more than 70 rings installed. Harriet, which is four stories tall and as long as a football field, will continue boring over the next six months before breaking through on Dodge Island.  Harriet will then be partly disassembled, turned around and re-assembled before boring out the separate return tunnel to Watson Island.

Ceremony access badge

James Noe, Project Manager for Revere Control Systems, earned this badge for attending the Port of Miami Tunnel Boring Machine Launch Ceremony.

Revere Control Systems designed and built the controls for a conveyor system spanning the eastbound MacArthur Causeway which will remove the paste-like spoils from the tunnel and transport them to a plant on Watson Island where water will be removed.  Tons of soil is expected to be excavated for the tunnel. For more information on the tunneling process, visit http://www.portofmiamitunnel.com/system/js/back/ckfinder/userfiles/files/11-04-11-pomt-fact.pdf.

When complete, the tunnel will provide direct access between the Port of Miami and I-395 and I-95. The tunnel is also expected to improve traffic flow in downtown Miami by reducing the number of cargo trucks and cruise related vehicles on congested downtown streets.  The tunnel is expected to be open to the public by May of 2014.

New Logo Rolled Out as Part of Identity Makeover

After nearly a year of work on an identity makeover for the company, we began rolling out our new look this past fall. The centerpiece of that makeover was a new logo (shown at left). The objective was to achieve something simpler, more contemporary and easier to work with across all usages while maintaining a transitional appearance that built on the logo that had served us for 30 years. We’re very pleased with the result and particularly like the fact that the designers have given us a design that can be used in some different configurations, shown below.

Following the logo redesign came a new corporate brochure. This expansive, 16-page piece replaces 5 other brochures, addressing our capabilities and expertise in our primary industries. This literature element establishes a new corporate look, replacing an identity that was more than 10 years old, and was beginning to show its age.

This new look formed the basis for a new ad design that debuted in the print media last month. This design provides a consistent appearance across all the media we use while allowing customization to deliver a message that fits each book’s audience.

Other changes include building signage:

You will also begin seeing new identifying decals on the panels we ship:

We have chosen to phase in the identity change over a period of time to allow for gradual expenditures and minimal disruption to normal supply ordering cycles. This means that for a period of time, you will continue to see some usage of the old logo. We expect a complete replacement throughout all uses to take about 6 to 9 months.

CSIA Recertification Audit Passed

CSIA logoEarlier this month we participated in and passed our audit for CSIA (Control System Integrators Association) certification. CSIA members must be re-audited every 3 years in order to maintain their certification. This is the third time that we have passed the audit since our original certification in 2002.

The certification program was established by CSIA to help consumers of control system integration services identify those integrators that adhere to the best practices for the industry. The audit, performed by an independent third party, examines 200 criteria that cover all aspects of business operations, from general management and human resources practices to financial management and business development practices.

Our senior managers agree, as do most integrators who have achieved certification, that the process of preparing for the certification audit, and the feedback obtained from the audit, have contributed greatly to improvements in our business through the years.

We encourage all end users and consulting engineers to specify that the selected control system integrator for your projects must be CSIA certified to assure the greatest possible opportunity for a positive experience.

Port of Miami Tunnel Project-Phase 1 Ships

After several months of work on the Port of Miami Tunnel Project conveyor controls, Phase 1 has shipped. Phase 1 consists of two of the three fully functional enclosed housings, each 22′ long and weighing about 4 1/2 tons, that contain all of the control system elements needed to manage the conveyors that will be used with the tunnel boring machine.

Port of Miami Housings

The project consists of three 22-foot-long portable housings. Each housing contains the complete control system for conveyor operation.

The process of loading two of the housings on a flatbed truck for the trip to Miami is chronicled in the video below. The straightforward process was challenged a bit by a steady rain that fell throughout the day.

Reminder: Tax Relief Act

This tax relief provision expires on 12/31/2011 so take action right away, before the rush.

House Bill H.R. 4853 (Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization, and Job Creation Act of 2010) was signed into law on December 17, 2010. The Tax Relief Act increases bonus depreciation from 50 percent to 100 percent for property acquired after September 8, 2010 and before January 1, 2012, and put in service before January 1, 2012. Generally, this is available for property eligible for MACRS with a depreciation period of 20 years or less, or off-the-shelf computer software. There is no limit to the total amount of bonus depreciation that a taxpayer may claim in a particular year. Taxpayers wanting to use bonus depreciation should consider accelerating their purchases into 2011 when the bonus depreciation is 100 percent.

Even though almost all automation machinery, equipment, and computer hardware and software are included in this provision, companies should contact their tax professionals to identify if and how these benefits apply to them.

Thanks to Rebecca Burgess at Schneider Electric for sharing this reminder with us. For more information on plant automation, process automation, industrial IT, or other automation and control services, see our web site.

Professional Service Contract With City of Auburn

Late last month, the City of Auburn issued a resolution authorizing a SCADA professional service agreement with Revere Control Systems for ongoing support, including emergency callout services, on control system equipment at the H.C. Morgan Water Pollution Control Facility, as well as for other instrumentation and equipment needed within the wastewater treatment and collection system on an as-needed basis. Revere provided the new SCADA system at the plant, and the City desired to continue utilizing Revere’s services for ongoing work. This is an extraordinary action for a municipality to take for control system services and a testament to Revere’s performance on the City’s SCADA system project.

Dan Amsden, president of Automation Alliance Group (AAG), of which Revere is a founding partner, recently attended the Moscow International Oil & Gas Exhibition (MIOGE) held in Omsk, Russia, June 20–24. Dan attended at the invitation of Russian AAG partner Insist Avtomatica (whose personnel are pictured in the booth with Dan), which has as customers many Russian oil and gas companies. Insist Avtomatica is an avid advocate of AAG and its resource sharing capabilities, and they invited AAG to have a presence with them at this show to explain in detail how such resource sharing works and how it benefits customers. Insist Avtomatica plans to use other AAG partners to support joint ventures between their Russian customers and other companies doing business in diverse parts of the world.
